The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.

Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
