The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company Unilever blocked the launch for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual series showcasing causes the company was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company
This latest announcement deepens the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed that Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he will create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised after corporate moves to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
