Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and being named best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.
Influences and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to temper his competitive fire, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the main top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it instills belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
