Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
