France to begin intercepting small boats in Channel after British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French maritime police representative says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a short-lived shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister left office.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats before they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for comment.
