Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
